Fable #603

previous | next

A Giant Oak stood near a brook in which grew some slender Reeds. Come close to me, said the Cat, I am very deaf. That means me, I suppose. But in the midst of the rejoicing over their good fortune, an old Mouse arose and said: I will say that the plan of the young Mouse is very good. When I am bigger, I shall make you a much better meal. When the Miser discovered his loss, he was overcome with grief and despair. Yes, replied the Tortoise, and I get there sooner than you think. That evening the Wolf entered the fold with the flock. We are drawing all the weight, not you, and we are keeping still about it besides.

An act of kindness is well repaid.
