Fable #778

previous | next

Two men were traveling in company along the road when one of them picked up a well-filled purse. How foolish I should be, he said, to throw you back. They must be on their way to sell the poor thing's hide, said another. The Tortoise meanwhile kept going slowly but steadily, and, after a time, passed the place where the Hare was sleeping. Standing at a safe distance from the cave, he inquired politely after the Lion's health. Just then, close by, they heard a hunter's horn and the yelping of a pack of hounds. And so they died, giving their lives for the sake of a taste of sweetness.

You are judged by the company you keep.
