Fable #593

A pair of Oxen were drawing a heavily loaded wagon along a miry country road. Hurrying to King Monkey, he told him he had found a rich treasure, which he had not touched because it belonged by right to his majesty the Monkey. All this the Ass saw with much discontent. When the Judge called the case, witnesses declared that they had seen certain winged creatures in the neighborhood of the hollow tree, who hummed loudly, and whose bodies were striped, yellow and black, like Bees. By this time the poor birds' heads were in a whirl. But he had to leave his beautiful bushy tail behind him. Wise Judge Hornet quickly understood why they did so: They knew they could not build a honey comb and fill it with honey. He looked the Toad over very carefully. Mr. Toad, he said, I've been told that you cure anything! And when the Fox began his performance all over again, so dazed did they become, that they lost their hold on the limb, and fell down one by one to the Fox.

Be wise and shun the quack.
