Fable #589

previous | next

A long time ago, the Lion, the Fox, the Jackal, and the Wolf agreed to go hunting together, sharing with each other whatever they found. But the Reeds bowed low in the wind and sang a sad and mournful song. The Kid shivered as he thought of the terrible Wolf. I know it will make you sing like Apollo himself. You are a Bird, he said, and I am going to eat you! When the Wolf came up, he asked the Ass what had made him lame, and the Ass replied that he had stepped on a sharp thorn. There he stood up to his ears, in the muddy water, and madly clawing at the slippery sides of the hole in his effort to climb out. As for you, you can use your legs so well that I should have little chance of collecting the debt if I had to catch you for it!

Greatness has its penalties.
