Fable #521

previous | next

One bright morning as the Fox was following his sharp nose through the wood in search of a bite to eat, he saw a Crow on the limb of a tree overhead. What! All the Mice were much surprised that they had not thought of such a plan before. Do you think you can move the wagon by simply looking at it and whining about it? A great many persons in Rhodes had seen him do it and would prove that what he told was true. When the wind blew, the great Oak stood proudly upright with its hundred arms uplifted to the sky. The Wolf saw the wisdom of the advice, for he wanted to enjoy his meal without any danger of choking. The Dogs in the neighborhood noticed him carrying the basket and soon discovered what was in it. What use is it, said another, to read the stars, when you can't see what's right here on the earth?

Those who would mend others, should first mend themselves.
