Fable #402

previous | next

Some Boys were playing one day at the edge of a pond in which lived a family of Frogs. They had gone a little farther along the road, when three merchants passed by. I remember, he said guiltily, that one day as I was passing a field belonging to some priests, I was so tempted by the tender grass and my hunger, that I could not resist nibbling a bit of it. The Earthen Pot could not survive that sort of companionship very long. When he came up again he held a wonderful golden axe. He gobbled up the poor Frogs right and left and they soon saw what fools they had been. What if you should fall! Please listen to me and come down! Very well; now dance! And they turned their backs on the Grasshopper and went on with their work.
