Fable #401

previous | next

One bright morning as the Fox was following his sharp nose through the wood in search of a bite to eat, he saw a Crow on the limb of a tree overhead. One day the pair unexpectedly met a Lion. One day when the quarreling had been much more violent than usual and each of the Sons was moping in a surly manner, he asked one of them to bring him a bundle of sticks. Now the Fox was always looking for a chance to make fun of his neighbors. I had no right to do it, I admit- A great uproar among the beasts interrupted him. The Fox stood off and laughed. At first the Cranes flew away in great terror. And so far was he from carrying away the Ram, that the Ram hardly noticed he was there. At the ford the Ass again tumbled over; but when he had scrambled to his feet, it was a very disconsolate Ass that dragged himself homeward under a load ten times heavier than before.

Even the weakest may find means to avenge a wrong.
