Fable #391

previous | next

A poor Woodman was cutting down a tree near the edge of a deep pool in the forest. One evening he was walking along the open road outside the village. The next day, dressed in the skin, the Wolf strolled into the pasture with the Sheep. The foolish bird got the idea that if he lived like the Swan, swimming and diving all day long and eating the weeds and plants that grow in the water, his feathers would turn white like the Swan's. Besides, I did not know the Cranes were going to steal. I should be glad to do as you ask, he added, but I have noticed that there are many footprints leading into your cave and none coming out. No hidden gold did they find; but at harvest time when they had settled their accounts and had pocketed a rich profit far greater than that of any of their neighbors, they understood that the treasure their father had told them about was the wealth of a bountiful crop, and that in their industry had they found the treasure.

Be wise and shun the quack.
