Fable #214

previous | next

An Ass was feeding in a pasture near a wood when he saw a Wolf lurking in the shadows along the hedge. You can be as well-fed as I am if you want to, replied the Dog. If the Farmer said he would call in his neighbors and friends to help him do his work, this wheat will not be reaped for a while yet. Now there was a certain old Owl who had become very cross and hard to please as she grew older, especially if anything disturbed her daily slumbers. But in spite of its squeals and struggles to escape, the Shepherd tucked his prize under his arm and started off to the butcher's in the market place. Some days later, while stalking his prey in the forest, the Lion was caught in the toils of a hunter's net. And when the Merchant at last got him to his feet, much of the salt had melted away. My Sons, said the Father, do you not see how certain it is that if you agree with each other and help each other, it will be impossible for your enemies to injure you? The honor is not meant for you but for the image you are carrying.

Traitors may expect treachery.
