Fable #68

A Jackdaw chanced to fly over the garden of the King's palace. No doubt he was hungry, but that was not an excuse for stealing. Then he turned to the Fox. You divide it, he roared angrily. Show me a white paw, he said, or I won't let you in. A white paw, of course, is a feature few Wolves can show, and so Master Wolf had to go away as hungry as he had come. they cried. I have eaten goats and bulls and stags. So the Wolf spoke very humbly to the Dog, complimenting him on his fine appearance. There another unpleasant surprise awaited him. We cannot wait any longer for help from our friends. And off he walked very, very scornfully.

We often make much of the ornamental and despise the useful.
