How to Browse The Web
A lot of the web has been trapped behind algorithmic feeds. Whether that is computer automated content selection, or the natural selection of human curration. A lot of use are trapped in feeds.
- Social media feeds
- Link aggeration feeds
- Chat feeds
- Search feed
- Maybe an RSS feed
Sometimes it's fun to just bounce around webpages, nagivate the different structure, see the aesthetic taste of the creators. Scrolling straight down a list can be a bit dry. So, I've gather some ways to spice that up a bit.
Wiby
Wiby is a search engine, but you won't be using the search bar. Instead, you'll just press "surprise me". Keep doing this until you are bored, for find a really cool website to browse. A lot of these websites are older or mimic old-school web. So you are likely to found other neat things in there.
Marginalia's Explore Page
Marginalia is another search engine. And like with Wiby, you won't be using the search bar. Instead, direct your attention to the Explore page. This page will present you with a selection of random websites. There will be no attension paid to your preferences no the cohesion of the selection.
Webrings
Okay, I guess this is arguably a feed of some kind. But it's more fun than scrolling about. Webrings are basically a linked list of webpages. Each page has a "previous" and "next" page in some abstract listing of pages.
A selection of rings I've found (ideally, ones with a "random" button):
- Furryring
- Fediring and its randomizer
- Therian webring
- IndieWeb Webring and its randomizer
- XXIIVV webring and its randomizer
