Fable #963

previous | next

A Wolf prowling near a village one evening met a Dog. The next instant he flew at the Lion and stung him sharply on the nose. A fine hide makes an excellent meal for a hungry Dog, but the water was deep and the Dogs could not reach the hides from the bank. At last, when one of his huge feet came within an inch of King Lion's nose, the animals were so disgusted that they set upon the Camel in a rage and drove him out into the desert. But it was not long before he grew impatient with the Goose because she gave him only a single golden egg a day. Then he started wildly over the field, bleating for his mother. You are a Mouse, he said, and I am a sworn enemy of Mice. Now I promise you a full-grown Bull, if you but make the thief go away!

It is cowardly to attack the defenseless, though he be an enemy.
