Fable #939

One day, a long time ago, an old Miller and his Son were on their way to market with an Ass which they hoped to sell. If the Farmer said he would call in his neighbors and friends to help him do his work, this wheat will not be reaped for a while yet. Now there was a certain old Owl who had become very cross and hard to please as she grew older, especially if anything disturbed her daily slumbers. But in spite of its squeals and struggles to escape, the Shepherd tucked his prize under his arm and started off to the butcher's in the market place. Some days later, while stalking his prey in the forest, the Lion was caught in the toils of a hunter's net. And when the Merchant at last got him to his feet, much of the salt had melted away. No hidden gold did they find; but at harvest time when they had settled their accounts and had pocketed a rich profit far greater than that of any of their neighbors, they understood that the treasure their father had told them about was the wealth of a bountiful crop, and that in their industry had they found the treasure.

Do not depend on the promises of those whose interest it is to deceive you.
