Fable #907

previous | next

A certain Father had a family of Sons, who were forever quarreling among themselves. Why do you do that? he asked. How nice it will be when they are all hatched and the yard is full of fine young chicks. The Sheep were easily fooled. They recognized the song the Wolf sings before a feast, and in a moment they were racing back to the pasture. I made him promise not to hurt us, said the Fox. The Frogs hid themselves among the reeds and grasses, thinking the new king to be some fearful giant. They then went to bed in a cozy nest in the hedgerow and slept in quiet and comfort until morning. The poor Bear had to take to his heels, and he was able to save himself only by diving into a pool of water.

Do not play tricks on your neighbors unless you can stand the same treatment yourself.
