Fable #896

previous | next

A Wolf had stolen a Lamb and was carrying it off to his lair to eat it. As she thought of how she would settle that matter, she tossed her head scornfully, and down fell the pail of milk to the ground. But the Fox was already on his way to the woods. The Lion now recovered his good humor entirely. Now there were several Woodmen in the village who believed that they could easily win the same good fortune. The greedy Monkey followed the Fox to the trap. So with much rustling of feathers and a fierce air, he came down swiftly on the back of a large Ram. As for the Cat, he eats us. So be thankful, my child, that you escaped with your life, and, as long as you live, never judge people by their looks.

Men often condemn others for what they see no wrong in doing themselves.
