Fable #866

previous | next

A little hungry Mouse found his way one day into a basket of corn. The Countryman took the eggs to market and soon began to get rich. Jupiter saw what simple and foolish creatures they were, but to keep them quiet and make them think they had a king he threw down a huge log, which fell into the water with a great splash. He was really nothing but skin and bones, and it made him very downhearted to think of it. Your family and mine and all other animals have agreed to forget their differences and live in peace and friendship from now on forever. A great big monster, said one of them, stepped on little brother with one of his huge feet! That leap was so great, he said, that no other man could leap anywhere near the distance. He quickly piled all the game into one great heap. Whatever it is, it is wisest to keep at a safe distance.

We are often not so eager for what we seek, after we have found it.
