Fable #726

previous | next

It happened once upon a time that a certain Greek ship bound for Athens was wrecked off the coast close to Piraeus, the port of Athens. But the Eagle pounced upon her prey, the sweep of her great wings tumbling the Beetle a dozen feet away. Besides, the animals found it hard to keep their toes from under his heavy hoofs. Now a fine young Perch swam near. A great crowd of people followed the procession. Then he struck up a louder and still more rasping tune. The argument grew very pointed, and it looked as if the affair could not be settled without a battle, when at last, with much good sense, they agreed to let a judge decide the matter. In despair the Mice called a council, and there it was decided that the Mouse army was always beaten because it had no leaders. The Eagle was constantly pouncing on the Hare, and the Owl dined daily on Mice. But if you are divided among yourselves, you will be no stronger than a single stick in that bundle.

Those who would mend others, should first mend themselves.
