Fable #693

previous | next

One day, a long time ago, an old Miller and his Son were on their way to market with an Ass which they hoped to sell. But the Weasel was perfectly content. He was settled down for good. In terror the Boy ran toward the village shouting Wolf! But the Hare slept on very peacefully; and when at last he did wake up, the Tortoise was near the goal. It is said the quarrel grew out of the persecution the race of Geese suffered at the teeth of the Fox family. As you can imagine, there was quite a laugh when the Animals saw the ugly flat-nosed, hairless, pop-eyed little creature. He had tried to attack them several times, but they had kept together, and helped each other to drive him off. Off he started on a run. Wait, cried the Cock. And without more words the Wolf seized the poor Lamb and carried her off to the forest.

Bluff and threatening words are of little value with rascals.
