Fable #567

previous | next

A Lion and an Ass agreed to go hunting together. The Countryman took the eggs to market and soon began to get rich. Jupiter saw what simple and foolish creatures they were, but to keep them quiet and make them think they had a king he threw down a huge log, which fell into the water with a great splash. Your family and mine and all other animals have agreed to forget their differences and live in peace and friendship from now on forever. A great big monster, said one of them, stepped on little brother with one of his huge feet! That leap was so great, he said, that no other man could leap anywhere near the distance. But let me ask one question: Who will bell the Cat?

Do not listen to the advice of him who seeks to lower you to his own level.
