Fable #545

previous | next

Once a Cat and a Fox were traveling together. But the Eagle pounced upon her prey, the sweep of her great wings tumbling the Beetle a dozen feet away. Besides, the animals found it hard to keep their toes from under his heavy hoofs. Now a fine young Perch swam near. A great crowd of people followed the procession. Then he struck up a louder and still more rasping tune. The argument grew very pointed, and it looked as if the affair could not be settled without a battle, when at last, with much good sense, they agreed to let a judge decide the matter. In despair the Mice called a council, and there it was decided that the Mouse army was always beaten because it had no leaders. The Eagle was constantly pouncing on the Hare, and the Owl dined daily on Mice. Though it may be fun for you, it means death to us!

Men often condemn others for what they see no wrong in doing themselves.
