Fable #514

previous | next

Two Travellers, walking in the noonday sun, sought the shade of a widespreading tree to rest. I wouldn't even trouble to open my beak for anything like that! He knew the Fox could not get at him, so he went a little closer to get a good look at his enemy. Again and again he tried, but in vain. If it had not been for that terrible monster, the Mouse went on, I should have made the acquaintance of the pretty creature, who looked so good and gentle. The Fox wasted no time in talking. Nothing at all, replied the Dog. You carried on scandalously with Mr. Bumble Bee and you made eyes at every single Bug you could see. At last he became so heated that he pulled off his cloak, and, to escape the blazing sunshine, threw himself down in the welcome shade of a tree by the roadside.

The flatterer lives at the expense of those who will listen to him.
