Fable #504

previous | next

A Merchant, driving his Ass homeward from the seashore with a heavy load of salt, came to a river crossed by a shallow ford. You've been stuffing. That's what you get. What a horrible crime it was to eat grass that belonged to someone else! But an Eagle, circling overhead, heard the boasting chanticleer and, swooping down, carried him off to his nest. It's all the same to me, replied the Bull. So they held a council and decided that the very best thing to do was to drink up the river. At the ford the Ass again tumbled over; but when he had scrambled to his feet, it was a very disconsolate Ass that dragged himself homeward under a load ten times heavier than before.
