Fable #502

previous | next

A Fox that had been caught in a trap, succeeded at last, after much painful tugging, in getting away. But one cold winter evening, as they were walking homeward, the Satyr saw the Man blow on his fingers. But please do not tell anybody about it. The Stork gladly accepted the invitation and arrived in good time and with a very good appetite. The trunk of a fallen tree formed the only means of crossing the chasm, and on this not even two squirrels could have passed each other in safety. There he saw with much wonder and envy a flock of royal Peacocks in all the glory of their splendid plumage. If it is not decided soon, the honey will not be fit for anything. So she laid aside all hard words and spoke very kindly to him. Immediately they all fell upon him, the Wolf in the lead, and soon had made an end to him, sacrificing him to the gods then and there, and without the formality of an altar.

If you try to please all, you please none.
