Fable #493

previous | next

A Jackdaw chanced to fly over the garden of the King's palace. The Fox came too, but he was very cautious about it. The Sheep knew him for a very swift runner, who could easily take himself out of reach, were he so inclined. The Crane, as you can imagine, was very uneasy about putting her head in a Wolf's throat. Tweet, tweet, laughed the Birds. The first time he jumped he missed it by a long way. So they decided to leave the farmyard and to set out into the world along the road that led to the woods. At first his beams were gentle, and in the pleasant warmth after the bitter cold of the North Wind, the Traveler unfastened his cloak and let it hang loosely from his shoulders. Fancy me running away from a puny Lion! Without more ado, he dived and left the foolish Monkey to take care of himself, while he swam off in search of some human being to save.

We are often not so eager for what we seek, after we have found it.
