Fable #344

previous | next

One day a Stag came to a Sheep and asked her to lend him a measure of wheat. Haven't you got it? nothing! The Bat begged for his life, but the Weasel would not listen. So now, though he had not seen anything that even looked like a Wolf, he ran toward the village shouting at the top of his voice, Wolf! But the Fisherman quickly put the fish into his basket. Many died, and those who lived were so ill, that they cared for neither food nor drink, and dragged themselves about listlessly. What are you afraid of? asked a young Frog. So he decided not to wait and made off as fast as his legs could carry him.

Better to yield when it is folly to resist, than to resist stubbornly and be destroyed.
