Fable #316

previous | next

One bright evening as the sun was sinking on a glorious world a wise old Cock flew into a tree to roost. So intense did the heat become, that the Traveler at last decided to stop for a rest, and as there was no other shade to be found, the Traveler sat down in the shadow of the Ass. A chain!,cried the Wolf. But the big hulking Camel made himself very ridiculous as he kicked out his knotty legs and twisted his long clumsy neck. Delighted to find how much lighter his burden had become, the Ass finished the journey very gayly. You lie here in my cooling shade, and yet you say I am useless! Many a Hare and many a Mouse died. Thus at one swoop he had caught both meat and fish for his dinner.

It is better to yield than to come to misfortune through stubbornness.
