Fable #314

previous | next

There was once a Countryman who possessed the most wonderful Goose you can imagine, for every day when he visited the nest, the Goose had laid a beautiful, glittering, golden egg. He knew the Fox could not get at him, so he went a little closer to get a good look at his enemy. Again and again he tried, but in vain. If it had not been for that terrible monster, the Mouse went on, I should have made the acquaintance of the pretty creature, who looked so good and gentle. The Fox wasted no time in talking. Nothing at all, replied the Dog. You carried on scandalously with Mr. Bumble Bee and you made eyes at every single Bug you could see. The man who had found the purse fell into a panic. Then the Stag perceived that the legs of which he was so ashamed would have saved him had it not been for the useless ornaments on his head.

A change of habits will not alter nature.
