Fable #310

previous | next

There was once a Wolf who got very little to eat because the Dogs of the village were so wide awake and watchful. There he stood, unwilling to give up a single filbert and yet unable to get them all out at once. Just then the Ass kicked out with all his might, tumbling the Wolf a dozen paces away. The Cock that had won the battle flew to the top of the hen-house, and, proudly flapping his wings, crowed with all his might to tell the world about his victory. But the corn was tempting and the Mouse was determined to get in. The Ass came proudly out of the cave. With the first glimmer of dawn the Cock awoke. A chilly little wind came creeping with them making scary noises in the grass. Is there any special food you eat, or is it some divine nectar that makes you sing so wonderfully? He said, answered the other, that it was not at all wise to keep company with a fellow who would desert his friend in a moment of danger.

The smaller the mind the greater the conceit.
