Fable #255

previous | next

An Ass found a Lion's skin left in the forest by a hunter. Every day he went to the spot, dug up the treasure and counted it piece by piece to make sure it was all there. What is it you see? ,asked the Fox a little anxiously. Why did you put it there?, Why did you not keep it in the house where you could easily get it when you had to buy things? As a rule Mr. Wolf snapped up such delicious morsels without making any bones about it, but this Lamb looked so very helpless and innocent that the Wolf felt he ought to have some kind of an excuse for taking its life. First he whirled round and round like a top, then he hopped up and down, cutting all sorts of strange capers. But none got there earlier than Mother Monkey. But she was grasping in nature, so she did what the Wolf asked her to do. The Shepherd often catches and carries off one of us. What use is it, said another, to read the stars, when you can't see what's right here on the earth?

There is nothing worth so much as liberty.
