Fable #236

previous | next

The Mice once called a meeting to decide on a plan to free themselves of their enemy, the Cat. If that Lion had been alive, he said, it would have been a very different story. What is it?, he asked very respectfully, that has given you such beautiful voices? As soon as he saw the meat he grasped eagerly for it, only to find himself held fast in the trap. Still nearer came the object. The waves washed it up on shore. Silence!, the Oxen cried at last, out of patience. The Animals heard about the Stag's illness and came to ask after his health. Do not think, he said, that I submit to your cowardly treatment because I am afraid of you. They say that Jupiter punished him so, because he was such a lazy stay-at-home that he would not go to Jupiters wedding, even when especially invited. It was now an easy matter for the Lion to attack them one at a time, and this he proceeded to do with the greatest satisfaction and relish.

Whatever you do, do with all your might.
