Fable #199

previous | next

A Town Mouse once visited a relative who lived in the country. He found the Dog in his master's yard, and asked him to come out and be eaten. If you will please go around to the door of my house at the foot of the tree, my porter will let you in. On the way home the Ass, remembering what had happened at the ford, purposely let himself fall into the water, and again got rid of most of his burden. But they soon discovered how tame and peaceable King Log was. Show me how to walk, mother dear, answered the little Crab obediently, I want to learn. The Town Mouse ate very sparingly, nibbling a little of this and a little of that, and by her manner making it very plain that she ate the simple food only to be polite. So when they saw the Birds getting the better of it, they were Birds for all there was in it. Could she sing just one song, I know I should hail her Queen of Birds. Both Travelers rushed to the beach, but there they found nothing but a water-soaked log.

Do not grudge others what you cannot enjoy yourself.
