Fable #196

There was once a little Kid whose growing horns made him think he was a grown-up Billy Goat and able to take care of himself. Again the Villagers ran to help him, only to be laughed at again. With the first gust of wind the ends of the cloak whipped about the Traveler's body. But she kept her beak tightly closed on the cheese and did not return his greeting. Pussy stretched out her paw very carefully, pushed aside some of the cinders, and drew back her paw very quickly. The angry Merchant immediately turned about and drove the Ass back to the seashore, where he loaded him with two great baskets of sponges. But his weight upset the chair, and Ass and man rolled over together in the pile of broken dishes from the table. They were great friends and were constantly in all sorts of mischief together. And when the Fox began his performance all over again, so dazed did they become, that they lost their hold on the limb, and fell down one by one to the Fox.
