Fable #175

previous | next

An Ass was feeding in a pasture near a wood when he saw a Wolf lurking in the shadows along the hedge. He doubled on his tracks, he ran at top speed, he entered a dozen burrows, but all in vain. So the Fox led the Ass into a deep pit. Your majesty, said the Fox, you are too good. To tell the truth, I even ate up a shepherd now and then. Surprised but delighted at the prospect of so delicious a meal, the Wolf settled down under an open window, expecting every moment to have the child handed out to him. It was late in the day and the Woodman was tired. Seeing the body of the Mouse floating on the water, the Hawk swooped down, seized the Mouse and carried it off, with the Frog dangling from its leg. The hounds caught him, and soon put an end to the boaster and all his tricks.

Do not expect constancy in others if you have none yourself.
