Fable #170

previous | next

An Ass was feeding in a pasture near a wood when he saw a Wolf lurking in the shadows along the hedge. What a fool I am, he said, Here I am wearing myself out to get a bunch of sour grapes that are not worth gaping for. A Countryman chanced to see the unequal combat. The man took off his cap and mopped his brow. But come, I know a good place to hide till he is gone. Why, I know a whole sackful of tricks! Immediately they all fell upon him, the Wolf in the lead, and soon had made an end to him, sacrificing him to the gods then and there, and without the formality of an altar.

Pride goes before a fall.
