Fable #154

previous | next

A rich old farmer, who felt that he had not many more days to live, called his sons to his bedside. The North Wind tore angrily at the cloak, but all his efforts were in vain. So when one of the Dolphins saw a Monkey struggling in the water, he thought it was a man, and made the Monkey climb up on his back. Again the Villagers ran to help him, only to be laughed at again. With the first gust of wind the ends of the cloak whipped about the Traveler's body. But she kept her beak tightly closed on the cheese and did not return his greeting. Pussy stretched out her paw very carefully, pushed aside some of the cinders, and drew back her paw very quickly. The angry Merchant immediately turned about and drove the Ass back to the seashore, where he loaded him with two great baskets of sponges. Though it may be fun for you, it means death to us!

If you try to please all, you please none.
