Fable #114

previous | next

A frisky young Kid had been left by the herdsman on the thatched roof of a sheep shelter to keep him out of harm's way. But the Fisherman quickly put the fish into his basket. Many died, and those who lived were so ill, that they cared for neither food nor drink, and dragged themselves about listlessly. What are you afraid of? asked a young Frog. They look more able to carry the poor creature, than he to carry them. So away he hurried to the Crane. When the Mice peeped out and saw him in that position, they thought he had been hung up there in punishment for some misdeed. But to his own flock, he gave only just enough food to keep them alive. You can never be too sure, said the Kid, when he saw the Wolf making off to the woods.

Equals make the best friends.
