Fable #105

previous | next

A Peacock, puffed up with vanity, met a Crane one day, and to impress him spread his gorgeous tail in the Sun. What a horrible crime it was to eat grass that belonged to someone else! But an Eagle, circling overhead, heard the boasting chanticleer and, swooping down, carried him off to his nest. It's all the same to me, replied the Bull. So they held a council and decided that the very best thing to do was to drink up the river. Dear friend, he said, I was just on my way to visit a sick relative, when I stumbled into this string and got all tangled up. And so they died, giving their lives for the sake of a taste of sweetness.

One falsehood leads to another.
