Fable #101

previous | next

One moonlight evening as Master Fox was taking his usual stroll in the woods, he saw a number of Pheasants perched quite out of his reach on a limb of a tall old tree. Good night, and good enough for you. The Dog tried to run away from them. And indeed, Mercury did appear, first to this one, then to that. One day they were sitting by the fire, watching some chestnuts roasting on the hearth. As the Ass walked along, the people bowed their heads reverently or fell on their knees, and the Ass thought the honor was being paid to himself. Presently the Peacock saw an Eagle soaring high up in the blue sky and felt a desire to fly, as he had been accustomed to do. It was now the Ass's turn to confess. Oh, much bigger! No hidden gold did they find; but at harvest time when they had settled their accounts and had pocketed a rich profit far greater than that of any of their neighbors, they understood that the treasure their father had told them about was the wealth of a bountiful crop, and that in their industry had they found the treasure.

Do not play tricks on your neighbors unless you can stand the same treatment yourself.
