Fable #84

previous | next

A Dog asleep in a manger filled with hay, was awakened by the Cattle, which came in tired and hungry from working in the field. The Ass was so pleased to see the animals running away from him, just as if he were King Lion himself, that he could not keep from expressing his delight by a loud, harsh bray. He called himself an Astrologer, and spent his time at night gazing at the sky. The Hare was much amused at the idea of running a race with the Tortoise, but for the fun of the thing he agreed. The Frog puffed up still more. Hurrying to the tree where the Cock was roosting, he said very politely: A hearty welcome to our woods, honored sir. The Pheasants stared giddily. Besides, I have a very important errand that I had almost forgotten about. What is that on your neck? And without more words the Wolf seized the poor Lamb and carried her off to the forest.

Behavior that is regarded as agreeable in one is very rude and impertinent in another.
