Fable #51

A Shepherd Boy tended his master's Sheep near a dark forest not far from the village. Out popped the old Owl's head from the opening in the tree that served her both for door and for window. But just as he was about to put his head under his wing, his beady eyes caught a flash of red and a glimpse of a long pointed nose, and there just below him stood Master Fox. The Master was much alarmed at the strange behavior of the Ass, and calling for help, soon attracted the attention of the servants. Solid food!, said the Sheep. said the old Frog, puffing herself up. Can it be a crime to eat sheep, such stupid mutton heads? And, as usually happens when comrades argue, the talk began to get personal. As he drew his last breath, he said to those standing around: Learn from my fate not to take pity on a scoundrel.

It is easy to be brave when there is no danger.
