Fable #36

previous | next

A Jackdaw chanced to fly over the garden of the King's palace. In despair the Mice called a council, and there it was decided that the Mouse army was always beaten because it had no leaders. The Eagle was constantly pouncing on the Hare, and the Owl dined daily on Mice. And while the Wolf was getting very slowly and painfully to his feet, the Ass galloped away in safety. I cannot tell you how glad I am to see you here. Then we shall soon see to whom the honey really belongs. If any of you have any claim to the part that is left, he growled, stretching his claws meaningly, now is the time to speak up.

We are often not so eager for what we seek, after we have found it.
