Fable #20

previous | next

There was once a Wolf who got very little to eat because the Dogs of the village were so wide awake and watchful. How dare you paddle around in my stream and stir up all the mud!, he shouted fiercely. Out popped the old Owl's head from the opening in the tree that served her both for door and for window. But just as he was about to put his head under his wing, his beady eyes caught a flash of red and a glimpse of a long pointed nose, and there just below him stood Master Fox. The Master was much alarmed at the strange behavior of the Ass, and calling for help, soon attracted the attention of the servants. Solid food!, said the Sheep. said the old Frog, puffing herself up. You can't expect any constancy from me!

The least of our enemies is often the most to be feared.
