Fable #16

previous | next

A Fox that had been caught in a trap, succeeded at last, after much painful tugging, in getting away. His dancing was very clever indeed, and the animals were all highly pleased with his grace and lightness. Hurrying to King Monkey, he told him he had found a rich treasure, which he had not touched because it belonged by right to his majesty the Monkey. All this the Ass saw with much discontent. When the Judge called the case, witnesses declared that they had seen certain winged creatures in the neighborhood of the hollow tree, who hummed loudly, and whose bodies were striped, yellow and black, like Bees. By this time the poor birds' heads were in a whirl. Then the Stag perceived that the legs of which he was so ashamed would have saved him had it not been for the useless ornaments on his head.

Act in haste and repent at leisure - and often in pain.
